As a consequence of billionaires worsening our lives more and more there has been multiple efforts to decentralize the web. Meaning, instead of a single, central entity that controls what you can or cannot do, the social media platform is using a protocol that allows them to self host their account and move it if they don‘t agree with the central entity. The most popular decentralized platforms are probably Mastodon (built on ActivityPub) and Bluesky (built on AtProto).

I myself am a frequent user of Bluesky and vastly prefer it to whatever Twitter has turned into nowadays. But as much as I like it, it’s still has it irks and it still is just a microblogging platform.
